Regarding Saturday 17 March 2018

Dear Hashers,

This Year, Bali’s Day of Silence, “Nyepi”, Saka 1940 of Hindus, falls on Saturday the 17th of March.  As you know, the Balinese celebrate the new year of the Saka calendar with meditation and silence. No activities are allowed Island wide. The religious prohibitions include:Nyeip 2018 Saka 1940 Ogoh Ogoh

  • no pleasure (amati lelangon),
  • no traffic (amati lelungan),
  • no fire (amati geni) and
  • no work (amati karya).

Since Nyepi falls on a Saturday, Bali Hash House Harriers 2 will not be running as per our usual schedule.  We will therefore have our annual Nyepi run for Saka 1940 on SUNDAY the 18th of March, the day AFTER the Nyepi.

Remember, the silence begins at sunrise around 6:00 am of 17 March 2018 and will go on until sunrise around 6:00 am of 18 March 2018. During that time you should refrain from activity, no TV’s or loud music, no lamps or fires.

This is the only place in the world where the government will shut down an airport for meditation and introspection! The roads and beaches are off limits to all types of motorized vehicles and foot traffic.

While indoors, please ensure that all audio devices are turned down to a minimum volume. As the day draws to an end and the sun sets, curtains need to be drawn shut, with minimum light being used.
